Almost everyone experiences drain issues at one time or another. Some drain problems are easy to diagnose and resolve, but others may be mysterious, can occur at random, or can cause a great deal of frustration. In these situations, it pays to know a plumber who understands the different kinds of drain issues, how to prevent them, and how to resolve them. Here are some of the most common drain problems we encounter.
One of the most common reasons we’re called on for drain cleaning service in San Diego is slow drains. Slow drains can happen anywhere–kitchen and bathroom sinks, tubs, showers, utility sinks and floor drains. In bathrooms, hair and soap residue are the usual culprits. Slow kitchen sink drains are normally caused by grease residue and/or food waste. A standard drain snake will resolve most of these issues.
Drains get completely clogged for various reasons. Often its a matter of excess residue, hair or grease causing the blockage. In these cases using a drain snake is usually the right approach. Other times, however, a standard draion snake won’t clear the stoppage. Large roots in a drain line, for instance, will likely require a hydrojetter to remove them and clear the stoppage. If a drain line is badly corroded, broken or collapsed, it will probably require repair or replacement.
Toilet backups are some of the most common drain problems we encounter, and they’re usually the most frustrating. Sometimes its obvious why toilet backups occur–too much solid matter has been flushed. In these situations, a hand-held toilet auger can be used to clear the clogged line. Sometimes the toilet will have to be pulled to clear the line with a drain snake or manually clear the block from the toilet trap.
Whole house back ups, also known as mainline stoppages, can be a great inconvenience. In these situations, every drain in the house is affected. You may see waste water emerging from tub or shower drains, overflowing toilets or water flowing from the base of your toilet. A bubbling or gurgling noise coming from the toilet when water is running in a nearby faucet is a sign you may have this problem. Using a drain snake or hydrojetter at the main sewer line usually unclogs the drain. Sometimes the mainline is badly affected by roots, corrosion or another critical problem, which may call for main line repair or replacement.
For most people, drain problems and sewer line back ups happen on occasion. For others, clogged drains are a reoccuring problem and can disrupt day-to-day living in a big way. If you’re experiencing ongoing issues with your drains or main sewer line, there may be some underlying problems responsible for the back ups. These are some of the main reasons drains and sewer lines become so problematic that they require more than just a simple drain cleaning service.
If any part of your drain system or main sewer line are made of cast iron, chances are it shoud be replaced with ABS plastic or in some cases PVC. Cast iron is notorious for corroding away from the inside out. The inside of cast iron pipe is usually very rusty and rough making it difficult for solids to pass through unobstructed. It also makes it difficult (and sometimes impossible) to run a drain snake through to clear the line when it’s backed up. When the corrosion is severe, the cast iron will literally split open and begin to decay. This is one of the top reasons sewer line repair becomes necessary,
Most people don’t realize the amount of roots growing beneath their lansdcape. Trees, bushes and shrubs can have emense root systems that reach far and wide in search of water. It’s no surprise that roots are known to “attack” underground drain and sewer lines by penetrating the pipe in weak spots and connection points. Having a few roots penetrating your sewer line may not cause a big problem, but sometimes roots develop so rapid and massively that the drain line can begin to leak, crack and become completely blocked. Roots that make their way into a sewer or drain line can even grow up into other parts of the system, even above ground inside the building! When root problems get this bad drain snakes don’t always work so a hydrojetter might be used to cut away the roots with pressurized water. Sometimes the problem is so severe the affected drain or sewer line needs to be replaced.
In order for a sewer line to work properly, it must be installed in one continuous length, at a certain pitch (or downward angle) with no interuptions in flow. When a sewer line breaks or caves in on itself, this interupts the downward momentum of waste causing it to build up in the broken section of the line. It may also allow surrounding soil into the line, making the problem worse. When a sewer or drain line is in this bad of shape, drain cleaning service is virtually impossible. This usually happens with older cast iron or clay sewer lines, but plastic can also crack and break.
As mentioned, sewer and drain lines need to be installed at a great enough pitch that gravity can pull the water downward and carry it away. If your sewer line is backgraded (or angled in the wrong direction) or it has flat spots (which simply means there is no downward angle at all), it’s likely your waste water isn’t be properly carried away. This will cause a buildup of residue and solids in the affected areas. Sewer and drain lines with this problem may function in general but are often prone to back ups and slow drainage.
