There are three main reasons to switch to a tankless water heater: (1) Space. If you’re trying to create more space in your garage or water heater closet, a tankless unit is the answer. (2) Not enough hot water. If you’re frequently running out of hot water then a tankless water heater should solve this problem. (3) Energy efficiency. Since tankless water heaters only use gas or electricity when hot water is being used, they require much less energy than traditional storage tanks.
Providing the proper gas supply to tankless water heaters has always been an obstacle. Tankless water heaters usually require larger gas piping than most homes provide. To get around this, your plumber will have to modify to your gas system to bring the proper size piping to the unit. Thankfully, some of newer units operate on standard-sized gas piping.
Venting your tankless water heater may require some extra work. Having a condensing unit can simplify the task since the vented gases are safe to run through soft materials like PVC, which is inexpensive and easy to work with. If you have a non-condensing unit, you may need to modify or replace your current water heater vent, or create a new ventilation point in the building.
There are two types of gas-powered tankless water heaters, condensing units and non-condensing units. The main difference the way in which exhaust gasses are utilized during combustion. Condensing units are more energy efficient because hot exhaust gasses are recycled to with the heating process. You’ll need a discharge line installed to direct condensation to the exterior of the building or into a proper receptacle.
In nearly every situation, we recommend going with a gas or propane unit. Gas-powered water heaters deliver the highest BTU’s and have a much higher capacity for water use than electric units. Electric tankless water heaters draw a considerably high amount of amperage and tend to error when water use is high. They’re most suitable in small, single person applications such as ADU’s.
Since most tankless water heaters have fresh water connections on the bottom of the unit, you’ll probably need some plumbing modifications. In most cases, the piping that supplied your old water heater will be redirected to feed the tankless unit from below. There’s also a pressure relief valve on tankless units that should be directed to the exterior of the building.
